The key to success is making dreams come true
Jerry Buss bought the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team in 1979. Buss was passionate about basketball, so when he bought the team, he wanted to make his team’s games as exciting and thrilling as possible so that they could appeal to the rich and famous audiences such as the famous actors of Hollywood.
In the 1960s, Buss was a regular client of a famous night club called The Horn in Santa Monica, California. Buss enjoyed the spectacular performances at The Horn which they called Showtime. So, when he bought the Lakers basketball team, he wanted to create a great Lakers Showtime on a basketball court, an idea that no one in the basketball industry ever thought of.
In pursuit of his aspirations, he based his ideas on a game between two Southern California college basketball teams – the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins. In that game, both teams used a very spectacular strategy that they called Fast Break. When the center player got the ball, the whole team immediately ran all the way to the basket of their opponents. The center immediately threw the ball to the forward player, and once he got the ball, he passed to a guard or another forward for a lay-up or slam dunk.
Mr. Buss found a genius coach, Pat Riley. Along with Pat, the Lakers also recruited excellent players extremely well suited to this Fast Break tactic, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kurt Rambis (Center), Magic Johnson (Point Guard), Jamaal Wilkes, James Worthy, Byron , and Michael Cooper (Forward & Guard).
The Fast Break tactic is based on the run-and-gun concept. To carry out such tactics, the players have to run and run faster than their opponents. The players are also trained how to play fast, shoot and pass, lay-up and slam dunk.
The Lakers amazed their opponents with their speed and accuracy. The Lakers won the championship five times in the 1980s and 1990s. They created an extremely thrilling Showtime. They brought American basketball to the highest level ever. The basketball fans grew higher in number, and they all had the best moments in life. The Lakers basketball court in Los Angeles attracted many famous actors in Hollywood, of which the most loyal fan was actor Jack Nicholson.
